How to Move Your School – Introduction Course

In this short hour long presentation we show you the nuts and bolts of how to arrange both classroom and curriculum so that kids move while learning without the teacher losing valuable time needed to meet goals.

Most movement based learning modules make the mistake of separating academic time and time for movement. Much more optimal is to give the actual lessons while moving. This is proven to yield both long term learning and intrinsic motivation in which the student actively begins to seek out learning rather than resisting it.

We take you through how this works at all grade levels.

Once the lessons have been adapted this way, the results are astonishing, both in terms of academic performance and cooperative behavior, even in very tough schools – as the testimonials make clear.

Conact us for a live or web-based (Zoom or other) introductory presentation today. The cost of this presentation is $150.

What is Movement Method?

The way to effective learning through stress reduction and positive mental health for teachers and administrators alike.

Teachers and administrators in the modern school system are facing a multitude of challenges. Too much material for too little time, too many students per teacher, too little support of neuro-diversity, expectation of integration, and being told to address not only academic skills but also behavioral and social-emotional challenges for an extremely diverse student body, all with insufficient resources.

This results in stress, burn out and mental health issues for students, teachers and administrators alike.

Various programs and resources try to ameliorate the symptoms of this system failure. But they do not offer a fully integrated package of effective solutions – based on sound neuro-science – that easily and without major changes address the root of the problem.

Movement Method provides teachers and administrators alike an easy to implement program that achieves improved academic scores, better behavioral outcomes, and improved emotional and mental health resilience. It delivers this through integrating specific movement based activities that target both the learning receptors of the brain and the production of the communication hormone oxytocin, while simultaneously following lesson plans tailored to standardized curriculum so that there is no time conflict between movement and nature and academic goals.

This is the key – to deliver all three components at the same time. Only this way can the objectives of better academic performance, improved mental health outcomes and inclusion all be effectively attained.

Teachers and administrators who have followed our program describe Movement Method as a “Magic Formula” to not only address the above challenges but to also bring back the joy of teaching to the staff, as well as the joy of learning to the students.

But it’s not magic, it’s sound science as you will learn.

In a nutshell, we replace the stress hormone Cortisol with the happiness and communication hormone Oxytocin. Then we create what neuro scientists call BDNF (brain derived neuro trophic factor) which puts the brain in the optimal place for learning and cognition.

What Movement Method is: The Secret Equation Teacher Needs To Know

Human Environment + Physical Environment = LEARNING (Social, behavioral, academic brainchange)

The Physical and Human Environment are the most important components. The right Physical Environment calms the nervous system and provides respite from negative sensory triggers.

An empathetic human environment that follows intrinsic motivation creates buy-in and engagement. Without these components no approach can be effective. With these components the possibilities are limitless.

We offer consultation, workshops and webinars for school administration and teachers. As part of these sessions you will receive easy to follow and implement step by step guidelines for the human and physical environment as well as strategies for creating lesson plans , addressing social skills and behaviors. Following these steps your school will be able to build resilience in students, develop coping mechanism, reduce stress and make full inclusion effective.

Course Movement Method 2: The Guidelines to Creating the Right Human Environment

So many autism professionals out there apply what would otherwise be sound methodologies in a rigid and inflexible way resulting in heartbreak for parents as they grapple with whether or not they are doing the right thing by their child. This type of inflexible approach often elicits a fear of learning in the child or learning that does not generalize to other contexts. We created the Movement Method guidelines in direct response to this to ensure that anyone applying our methods, be they a parent, teacher or therapist/professional, will do so in a flexible, pressure free and child led way – thus optimizing their chance of success.

This two day intensive course will allow you to go more in-depth into the Movement Method guidelines in order to show you how to really set up not only the child but yourself for success. The cost of the course is $395 (teacher discount $325 for MM 1 & 2) and the price includes a light lunch.

Workshop Schedule

This workshop is a mixture of theory, interactive demos, case studies, individual and group exercises. It will start at 9am and end no later than 3pm with a break for lunch.

Even a short time in nature can reduce the stress level by lowering the cortisol level (cf. Hunter, Gillespie & Chen, 2019). In their 2019 review, Kuo and co-workers show that nature improves learning processes. Nature-based learning can increase student interest, improve grades and give all students the opportunity to be successful (cf. Kuo et al., 2019.

The results of the present study show that learning in motion is an extremely individual need of every student and that the Movement Method has proven to be a successful example for the practical implementation of learning in motion.

  • Completed Movement Method 2
  • Age 16 and older; neuro-typical only (for young adults on the spectrum check with your trainer regarding participation)

What will be covered in Movement Method 3?

In this 5 day course you learn the really difficult stuff. How to address and change dysfunctional behaviors. How to teach really effective social skills. How to create neuroplasticity that last. How to really teach academics. How to do what schools find the most difficult task of all – creating real inclusion.

When you reach this level you begin to operate on a level that goes way beyond the therapeutic while at the same time upping your skills for creating well-being. Centers that have gone through Movement Method Level 3 often find themselves in demand as adjunct campuses for schools, and regional mental health services, and therefore find access to greater funding and staffing. If you want to go further than being just a therapeutic riding center, and becoming part of your local educational and mental health authority, then this is the gateway course.

Workshop Schedule

You can take Movement Method 3 as a 5 day consecutive course or you can break it up into modules which can be done either with a physical instructor or via Zoom and other online tools with direct feedback from instructors and evalutators.

Day 1: The Physical Environment

Learn how to make-over any environment – both indoor and outdoor – for the maximum sensory and therefore and emotional/intellectual optimization. Often the environment that practitioners are trying to work in are so sensory-negative that real learning is impossible. We show you in really practical steps, how to create superb environments with very little budget. No matter the location.

Day 2: The Human Environment

Creating the right Human Environment is perhaps the biggest challenge. It is no secret, that riding centers, schools, and therapy centers often attract very controlling personality types, that work against the goals of well-being and learning. Sometimes without even realizing it. Getting past this both in yourself and learning to manage and optimize the other personalities involved in the environment is a crucial skill if you want to be successful. We teach you very practical skills in both identifying and adapting the various personality types in your environment so that from the client’s point of view the people around them are at their best. Obviously this requires continual management. We introduce you to the skills required for this.

Day 3: Behaviors

Although we are not trying to fix people and indeed we recognize and celebrate the gifts of neuro-difference, it is also true that some behaviors can be so challenging that they threaten the client’s and the families’ well-being. How to address these challenging behaviors and gradually shape them into more functional responses is a real art form. Among other challenging behaviors you will learn to address are: aggression, meltdowns, toilet training, turn taking, waiting, personal hygiene and more.

Day 4: Academics

There is no debate anymore among educational scientists, that movement is essential for learning. However, most educational programs still separate times of movement from times of learning and still try to deliver learning while sitting. i.e. They go run outside, then they go sit and do math. It is now proven that it’s far more effective to teach during the moving sessions, not after them. But how to deliver this?

This is one of our specialties. We work all over the work, not just with therapeutic riding centers, but with schools, universities, and corporate institutions (neuro-typical as well as neuro-different) to provide cutting edge strategies for moving while learning.

We will show you how to teach basic math and science, and then much more complex, pre-college modules as well such as statistics, and advanced geometry and more.

Day 5: Inclusion

This is the holy grail for most learning facilities. There is much talk about the need for inclusion, but in reality most places simply put the neuro-different people in a corner, while teaching the neuro-typicals in another corner and call this inclusion, when it is anything but. We have designed modules that are now considered a gold standard for schools and other learning centers in many countries. Each educational module we show you has specific guidelines for how to include people of different cognitive abilities as well as different learning styles in the same group exercises, so that everybody participates and everybody learns and no-one has to sit in a corner or participate in something they don’t really understand. On Day 5 you will learn through practical exercises as well as analysis how to make inclusion work.

What to bring

  • Please bring plenty of water to drink and something to snack on.
  • Notebook and pen
  • It is also good to come with plenty of examples of where you tried and succeeded or failed to address behaviors, academics or inclusion.
